A different winter experience still exists largely undisturbed: Nyūtō Onsen, a cluster of remote, snowbound hot spring inns deep in Akita's mountains, where the wildness isn't staged for cameras.
The Story
A Hot Spring Village Named for Its Shape Nyūtō Onsen takes its name from nearby Mount Nyūtō, and consists of seven small, separate ryokan inns scattered through forested terrain, each drawing from independent natural spring sources with distinct mineral compositions.
Tsurunoyu: Where Samurai Reportedly Recovered The oldest of the seven inns, Tsurunoyu, dates back roughly 300 years and is associated with local legend claiming wounded samurai used its waters to recover after battle.
A National Park Built Around Volcanic Activity The surrounding national park sits within an active volcanic zone, which is precisely why the region hosts such a high concentration of naturally distinct hot spring sources within a small area.

- 3Pack genuinely cold-weather gear, including waterproof boots — several inns require walking outdoors between buildings, even in heavy snow.
