Akagi Shrine — Mystical Forest Sanctuary

Akagi Shrine (赤城神社) sits on the shore of Lake Onuma (大沼, 1,350m elevation) in the caldera of Mt. Akagi (赤城山, 1,828m), a dormant volcano in northern Gunma. The shrine is accessed via a forested approach through 300-year-old cedar and beech trees, creating a mystical atmosphere enhanced by the lake's mirror-like surface reflecting the shrine's vermillion torii gates and surrounding volcanic peaks. The shrine is dedicated to the dragon deity believed to inhabit Lake Onuma, and local legends tell of battles between the Akagi and Nikko mountain deities.

The shrine's setting is powerfully atmospheric — the combination of volcanic caldera, primeval forest, and sacred architecture creates a sense of ancient Japan. The lake is popular for camping, fishing, and boating in summer, and freezing solid in winter (January-February) when ice fishing festivals are held. Autumn (mid-October) brings peak foliage — maples and beeches turn red and gold, reflected in the lake's still water.
