Akashi Kaikyo Bridge — World's Longest Suspension Bridge
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (明石海峡大橋) spans 3,911 meters across the Akashi Strait, holding the world record for longest central span (1,991m) of any suspension bridge. Completed in 1998, the bridge connects Kobe with Awaji Island, supporting the highway link to Shikoku. The engineering feat withstands typhoons, earthquakes, and ship collisions using seismic-resistant design — it survived the 1995 Hanshin earthquake during construction.
The bridge is nicknamed 'Pearl Bridge' (パールブリッジ) for its nighttime illumination — LED lights change colors seasonally and for special events, reflecting on the strait waters below. The Bridge Exhibition Center (橋の科学館) explains construction and offers bridge walk tours along maintenance catwalks 300m above the sea.
