Akita City Omoriyama Zoo (秋田市大森山動物園) is one of Japan's few zoos emphasizing cold-climate species and winter adaptations. The zoo houses Siberian tigers, Amur leopards, red pandas, Japanese serow, and Japanese macaques (snow monkeys), with exhibit design focused on natural habitats and educational interpretation. In winter (December-February), the zoo transforms into a 'Snow Zoo' — animals are most active, Siberian tigers play in snow, and red pandas' thick fur is fully puffed.

The zoo's 'Animals in Winter' program (冬の動物園) explains evolutionary adaptations: how Siberian tigers' wide paws act as snowshoes, how red pandas' bushy tails wrap around their bodies for warmth, how snow monkeys huddle for thermoregulation. Summer (July-August) is hot (30°C+) and animals are lethargic; winter is the optimal visiting season. The zoo also has a petting area with goats, rabbits, and guinea pigs, plus a small amusement park with a Ferris wheel offering views of Akita City.
