Dakigaeri Gorge — Autumn Leaf Valley & Suspension Bridges 2

Dakigaeri Gorge (抱返り渓谷) is a 10-kilometer river valley carved by the Tamagawa River, renowned as one of Tohoku's premier autumn foliage destinations. The name translates to 'hug and return,' referencing the gorge's narrowness in pre-modern times — travelers had to hug the cliff walls to navigate the path. Today, a well-maintained hiking trail with suspension bridges and observation decks allows safe exploration of the gorge's dramatic scenery: turquoise rapids, moss-covered boulders, waterfalls, and steep cliffs draped in red, orange, and yellow foliage.

The gorge's centerpiece is the Mikaeri no Taki waterfall (回顧の滝, 'Looking Back Waterfall'), a 30-meter cascade plunging into a cobalt pool. The trail to the waterfall (2 kilometers one-way, 40 minutes) crosses five suspension bridges, each offering postcard-worthy views. The gorge is most spectacular in mid-October when maple, beech, and ginkgo trees reach peak color, contrasting with the river's blue-green water and dark volcanic rock.
