Fukushu-en Garden — Suzhou-Style Chinese Garden

Fukushu-en (福州園) is a traditional Suzhou-style Chinese garden built in 1992 to commemorate 10 years of sister-city relations between Naha and Fuzhou, China. The garden was designed by Chinese landscape architects and constructed using materials imported from Fuzhou — limestone rocks, roof tiles, decorative elements — creating an authentic Chinese garden aesthetic rare in Japan.

The compact garden (8,500m²) contains all classic Suzhou elements: pavilions over water, zigzag bridges (evil spirits can't turn corners), moon gates, carved lattice windows, and scholar's rocks (太湖石) from Lake Tai. The garden reflects the historical relationship between the Ryukyu Kingdom and Ming/Qing China, when Ryukyuan tributary missions visited Fuzhou regularly.
