Hamamatsu Air Base Festival — JASDF Aerial Demonstrations
Hamamatsu Air Base (浜松基地) is Japan Air Self-Defense Force's (JASDF) largest air base, home to the Blue Impulse aerobatic team and Air Park museum. The annual air base open day (usually October) attracts 100,000+ visitors for aerial demonstrations, aircraft displays, and Blue Impulse precision flight show. The festival provides rare public access to military aircraft — F-15 fighters, C-130 transport planes, rescue helicopters — with opportunities to enter cockpits and meet pilots.
Even outside the festival, the Air Park museum is open year-round (free admission) displaying 20+ retired aircraft including F-86 Sabre, F-104 Starfighter, and T-2 trainers. The museum has flight simulators (¥100/session), cockpit sit-in experiences, and exhibits explaining JASDF history and technology. For aviation enthusiasts, Hamamatsu offers accessible introduction to Japan's air defense capabilities.
