Tenranzan Hiking — Mountain Ridge Trail & Temple

Mt. Tenranzan (天覧山, 197m) is Hanno's introductory hiking mountain — a gentle 40-minute ascent through cedar and deciduous forest to a summit offering panoramic views over the Hanno Basin and, on clear days, the Tokyo skyline 40 kilometers distant. Despite the low elevation, the trail provides legitimate forest bathing experience — well-maintained paths, interpretive nature signs, and quiet forest sections far from urban noise. The trailhead begins at Nohoin Temple (能仁寺), a 14th-century Zen temple with traditional rock garden.

The mountain's name ('Mountain Seen by the Emperor') derives from an 1883 visit by Emperor Meiji during military exercises. The summit features a small observation deck and monument marking the imperial visit. The ridge trail continues beyond Tenranzan to Mt. Tagonoyama (多峯主山, 271m), adding 60 minutes and more challenging terrain. The extended ridge hike offers solitude and mature forest uncommon so close to Tokyo metropolitan area.
