The Iwase Canal (岩瀬運河) district in northern Toyama City is a preserved Meiji-era port town featuring historic wooden warehouses (kura, 蔵) along a canal that once handled shipping for Toyama's rice and goods trade. The district flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Toyama Bay's primary commercial port before modern shipping shifted to larger facilities. Today, the canal-side warehouses have been restored and converted to cafes, restaurants, galleries, and shops, creating an atmospheric neighborhood blending history and modern use.

The highlight is Mori House (森家, Mori-ke) — a beautifully preserved shipping merchant's residence from 1878 (National Important Cultural Property) showcasing traditional architecture, business offices, living quarters, and a kura storehouse. The district also includes sake breweries (still operational, offering tastings), traditional crafts shops, and canal-side walking paths lined with cherry trees and historic lamp posts.

Iwase is quieter and more authentic than heavily touristed port towns like Kurashiki or Otaru, offering peaceful strolls through lived-in history rather than theme-park atmosphere. The district is especially atmospheric in evening when warehouses are lit and reflections shimmer on the canal.
