JMSDF Kure Museum — Walk Inside a Real Submarine
The JMSDF Kure Museum (海上自衛隊呉史料館), also known as the 'てつのくじら館' (Iron Whale Museum), offers the rare opportunity to board and explore a real decommissioned submarine — the JS Akishio, a diesel-electric attack submarine that served the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force from 1986 to 2004. The submarine is displayed outdoors, elevated next to the museum building, and visitors walk through its interior from bow to stern, experiencing the claustrophobic reality of submarine operations.
Inside the Akishio, the narrow passageways, low ceilings, and compact compartments reveal how 75 crew members lived and worked for months at a time underwater — bunks stacked three-high, cramped mess hall, control room with periscopes and navigation equipment, and torpedo room with dummy torpedoes. Audio guides (Japanese/English) explain each section's function and daily submarine routines. The museum building's indoor exhibits document Japan's post-WWII maritime defense history, minesweeping operations (JMSDF's critical post-war role removing wartime mines from Japanese waters), and submarine technology. The combination of hands-on submarine exploration and educational exhibits provides an accessible, engaging introduction to naval engineering and modern defense operations, with no glorification of militarism — the focus is on technology, operations, and peacekeeping missions.
