La France Pears — Yamagata's Premium Autumn Fruit
La France pears (ラ・フランス) are a French pear variety that thrives in Yamagata's climate, producing fruit with exceptional sweetness, buttery texture, and intense aromatic fragrance. While the variety fell out of favor in France due to irregular shape and bruising susceptibility, Japanese farmers perfected cultivation techniques emphasizing flavor over appearance. Yamagata now produces 80% of Japan's La France pears, harvested October-November but aged 2-3 weeks post-harvest to achieve optimal ripeness — the fruit must be soft to gentle thumb pressure before eating. The fully ripe pear has custard-like texture and flavor described as combining pear, honey, and white wine. La France pears are sold throughout Yamagata during autumn at fruit shops, farmers markets, and highway rest stops. Premium gift boxes contain 6-8 carefully wrapped pears (¥3,000-5,000), while eating-grade fruit costs ¥300-500 per pear. Many farms offer pick-your-own experiences during harvest season.
