Lake Shinji Sunset — Ranked Top 100 Sunsets in Japan
Lake Shinji (宍道湖) is Japan's seventh-largest lake, famous for its spectacular sunsets ranked among the nation's top 100. The lake's brackish water (mix of seawater from nearby Lake Nakaumi and freshwater from rivers) creates unique shimmer during sunset. The best viewpoint is Shinji Lake Ohashi Bridge or the lakefront promenade in Matsue, where the sun appears to sink directly into the water during clear evenings.
The lake is also renowned for shijimi clams (freshwater clams), which thrive in brackish conditions. These tiny black clams are harvested daily by fishermen using traditional basket nets, supplying miso soup ingredients across Japan. Matsue's shijimi miso soup (しじみ汁) is a regional breakfast staple.
