Matsue Castle — Original Black Castle National Treasure

Matsue Castle (松江城) is one of Japan's 12 surviving original castles, built in 1611 and never destroyed by war or fire. The five-story, six-floor black keep earned the nickname 'Plover Castle' (千鳥城, Chidori-jo) for its wing-like roof gables resembling a plover bird in flight. The castle was designated National Treasure in 2015 after historical documents proved its construction date.

Unlike reconstructed castles, Matsue's wooden interior, steep stairs, and defensive features remain authentic Edo-period architecture. The top floor observation deck provides 360° views of Lake Shinji, Matsue city, and surrounding mountains. The castle's dark exterior contrasts with white castles like Himeji, representing different regional aesthetics.
