Michinoku Coastal Trail
The Michinoku Coastal Trail stretches over 1,000 kilometers along the Pacific coast from Aomori Prefecture through Iwate and Miyagi to Fukushima, creating Japan's longest long-distance hiking route and a living memorial to the communities affected by the 2011 tsunami. The trail was established in 2019 to support recovery efforts by bringing visitors back to coastal areas, showcasing the region's natural beauty, and honoring resilience. The Miyagi section runs approximately 220 kilometers through the prefecture's coastline, connecting fishing villages, scenic headlands, beaches, and forest paths while telling stories of disaster and recovery. The trail passes through areas that experienced devastating tsunami damage, where markers, monuments, and preserved ruins remind hikers of March 11, 2011, while the rebuilt communities demonstrate remarkable resilience. Between these sobering reminders, the trail reveals the Sanriku Coast's extraordinary beauty: dramatic cliffs dropping to azure waters, pine-covered islands emerging from the sea, peaceful beaches, and traditional fishing villages where life centers around the ocean's rhythms. The trail accommodates various hiking styles from day hikes exploring specific sections to multi-day through-hiking covering extended distances. The infrastructure includes marked trails, rest facilities, accommodation information, and detailed maps. Walking the trail provides intimate connection with coastal communities, as the route deliberately passes through towns where hikers support local businesses and interact with residents.
