Mitsukejima Rock — Battleship Island at Sunrise

Mitsukejima (見付島, 'Found Island') is a striking 28-meter-tall conical rock island rising from the shallow waters off Suzu's eastern coast, connected to the mainland by a sandbar exposed at low tide. The rock's distinctive triangular profile has earned it the nickname Gunkan-jima (軍艦島, 'Battleship Island') for its resemblance to a warship's bow cutting through waves. The rock is Noto Peninsula's most iconic natural landmark and a designated National Natural Monument.

Local Shinto legend holds that Mitsukejima was originally the ship of the sea goddess Noto-hime, which turned to stone when she reached this coast. A small torii gate stands on the beach facing the rock, marking it as a sacred site. The rock is composed of andesite lava from ancient volcanic activity, eroded by millennia of wave action into its current sharp profile. The surrounding beach (Mitsukejima Beach) is shallow and calm, popular with families in summer, but the real draw is the rock's photogenic quality — especially at sunrise when the sun rises directly behind the rock (seasonal variation applies), creating dramatic silhouettes reflected in wet sand.
