Miyagi Zao Ski Resort and Okama Crater
Miyagi Zao encompasses both a world-class ski resort renowned for its powder snow and ice-encrusted trees, and the stunning Okama crater lake, a vivid emerald volcanic caldera that ranks among Tohoku's most dramatic natural wonders. The Zao mountain range straddles the Miyagi-Yamagata border, with the Miyagi side offering easier access from Sendai and equally spectacular alpine scenery. In winter, Zao becomes one of Japan's premier ski destinations, with the Sumikawa Snow Park and Miyagi Zao Eboshi Resort providing extensive terrain for all skill levels. The area is particularly famous for 'snow monsters' (juhyo)—trees so heavily coated with snow and ice that they transform into fantastical frozen sculptures resembling alien creatures. These formations occur due to specific wind and moisture conditions that cause supercooled water droplets to freeze instantly on contact with trees, building up layers of ice and snow into bizarre shapes that can reach several meters in height. Night skiing illuminations transform the snow monsters into an otherworldly landscape of glowing frozen forms. Beyond winter, the mountains reveal different beauty when snow melts and alpine hiking trails open, typically from May through October. The crown jewel is Okama, a circular crater lake 300 meters in diameter filled with opaque emerald water whose color shifts from green to blue to grey depending on weather, light, and season. The lake sits at 1,600 meters elevation within a volcanic crater formed by eruptions over millennia, surrounded by barren volcanic slopes that contrast dramatically with the vivid water.
