Momiji Kairo Maple Corridor — Autumn Foliage Tunnel
The Momiji Kairo (紅葉回廊, 'Maple Corridor') is a 150-meter pathway along the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko lined with 60 massive Japanese maple trees that create a tunnel of red and orange foliage in autumn. The trees were planted in the 1960s and have matured into enormous specimens with canopies meeting overhead. Walking through the corridor at peak color (mid-November) feels like passing through a stained-glass cathedral — the sunlight filtering through red leaves creates a warm amber glow.
The corridor forms the centerpiece of the annual Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival (early November), when the pathway receives evening illuminations and the lakeside area hosts food stalls and craft vendors. The combination of the illuminated maple tunnel, Mt. Fuji visible across the lake, and the festival atmosphere makes this Yamanashi's premier autumn foliage destination. Even outside the festival, the corridor provides spectacular daytime foliage photography opportunities with minimal crowds during weekdays.
