Nara National Museum — Buddhist Art Treasures
Nara National Museum (奈良国立博物館) is Japan's premier museum for Buddhist art, housing over 2,000 Buddhist sculptures, paintings, ritual objects, and sutras from the 7th–14th centuries. The museum's collection focuses on Nara Period (710–794) and Heian Period (794–1185) Buddhist art from Nara's temples, providing context for the temple visits. The permanent collection rotates every few months, ensuring repeat visits offer new objects.
The museum's main building (Meiji Period Western-style architecture, 1894) contrasts beautifully with the traditional Buddhist art within. Highlights include wooden Heian Period Buddha statues retaining original gold leaf and pigment, bronze ritual implements, illuminated sutras on indigo-dyed paper with gold calligraphy, and devotional paintings depicting Pure Land paradises. Annual Shoso-in Treasures Exhibition (October–November) displays Imperial treasures from the 8th century Shoso-in Repository — this limited exhibition attracts national attention and requires advance tickets. The museum shop sells high-quality art books and reproductions.
