Nichiyoichi Sunday Market — 300 Years of Commerce
Every Sunday since 1690, the Nichiyoichi Sunday Market unfolds along a 1.3-kilometer stretch of Otesuji Street in central Kochi. It is one of the longest-running open-air markets in Japan, with 400+ stalls selling everything from farm vegetables to handmade crafts, grilled ayu fish to potted orchids. The market begins at sunrise (around 5:00am in summer, 6:00am in winter) and runs until 3:00pm, rain or shine.
The market is a living archive of rural Kochi life. Many vendors are elderly farmers from mountain villages who bring their surplus harvest — yuzu citrus, myoga ginger, forest-foraged mushrooms — sold in small bundles with hand-written price tags. The atmosphere is unhurried; vendors sit on folding stools, chat with regulars, and offer samples freely. For visitors, this is as close as you can get to pre-industrial Japanese commerce still functioning in a modern city.
