Niigata Bandai Bridge — Romantic Sunset Over Shinano River
The Bandai Bridge spans the Shinano River at the heart of Niigata City, connecting the historic riverside district with the modern city center. Built in 1929 with art deco granite arches, the bridge has become Niigata's symbolic structure — appearing on municipal logos, in poetry, and in the chorus of the Niigata folk song 'Itsuki no Komoriuta.' The bridge is particularly beautiful at sunset (18:00–19:00 in summer) when the western sky turns orange behind the six granite arches and the river reflects both bridge and sky.
The riverside promenade beneath the bridge hosts weekend craft markets, and the area comes alive during Niigata Festival (early August) when the bridge is closed to traffic and becomes a viewing platform for the river fireworks display.
