The Niji-no-Matsubara pine grove fronts a 5km bicycle lane alongside the beach, rated by Cycling magazine as one of Japan's top 10 coastal cycling experiences. The pine trees filter the sea breeze and create a shifting light pattern on the road surface as the rider moves beneath the canopy — the effect, particularly in morning light, is a sequence of illuminated frames through the trunks. The path ends at the Matsuura River mouth where Karatsu Castle is visible on the opposite bank.

Access Information

Bicycle rental from Karatsu Station (¥500–800/day, first-come). The cycling lane runs from the station beach path to Niji-no-Matsubara Koen (5km, no elevation change). Return via the pine grove interior trail for variety.
