Railway Museum — Japan's Train History Cathedral
The Railway Museum (鉄道博物館, Tetsudo Hakubutsukan) is one of the world's finest train museums — 28,000 square meters housing 41 historic railway vehicles from steam locomotives to bullet trains, interactive driving simulators, a working miniature railway diorama the size of a tennis court, and comprehensive exhibits on Japan's rail technology development. Opened in 2007 and expanded in 2018, the museum represents JR East's definitive collection of railway heritage.
The main exhibit hall displays trains chronologically: Meiji-era steam locomotives, 1930s electric trains, postwar luxury sleeper cars, and first-generation Shinkansen. Visitors can board most vehicles to examine interior details. The museum's scale and interactivity make it compelling for both train enthusiasts and general visitors — even non-railfans appreciate the engineering stories. The rooftop terrace overlooks active Shinkansen tracks where trains pass every 3–5 minutes at full speed.
