Perry Road — Historic Black Ships Harbor Street

Perry Road (ペリーロード) is a cobblestone pedestrian street in Shimoda following the route that Commodore Matthew Perry walked from his landing point to Ryosenji Temple for treaty negotiations in 1854. The street preserves Edo and Meiji-era architecture — traditional namako-kabe plaster walls (white lines creating grid pattern), willow trees lining a canal, and preserved merchant houses converted to cafes, galleries, and boutiques.

The street commemorates the pivotal moment when Perry's 'Black Ships' (armed steamships) arrived and pressured Japan to end 220 years of isolation. The resulting Treaty of Kanagawa opened Shimoda as one of Japan's first ports to foreign trade, fundamentally changing Japanese history. Perry Road allows walking through this history while experiencing traditional streetscape — though heavily restored for tourism, the atmosphere captures Edo-period aesthetics.
