Ritsurin Garden
Ritsurin Garden stands as one of Japan's finest landscape gardens, a masterpiece of Edo-period design that rivals even the famous gardens of Kyoto. Completed after a century of development by successive feudal lords of the Takamatsu domain, the garden encompasses 75 hectares of meticulously crafted landscapes featuring six ponds, thirteen artificial hills, and countless perfectly pruned pine trees that form living sculptures against the backdrop of Mount Shiun. Unlike typical strolling gardens, Ritsurin was designed with multiple viewing circuits, each revealing different perspectives and seasonal displays. The Southern Garden showcases classical daimyo garden design with formal tea houses, arched bridges, and carefully framed views, while the Northern Garden presents a more naturalistic landscape with spacious lawns and modern plantings. Walking the garden's winding paths, visitors discover carefully orchestrated scenes that change with every step, a technique called 'hide and reveal' where paths curve to slowly unveil new vistas. The garden's ponds reflect surrounding trees and hills in mirror-perfect stillness, while koi carp glide beneath the surface. Several traditional tea houses offer matcha green tea service with seasonal wagashi sweets, allowing visitors to rest while contemplating the artistry of nature and human design in perfect harmony.
