Sakae District — Nagoya's Neon-Lit Shopping & Nightlife Heart
Sakae (栄, 'prosperity') is Nagoya's downtown entertainment and shopping district, centered on the iconic Nagoya TV Tower (built 1954, Japan's oldest TV tower) and sprawling underground shopping malls connecting multiple subway stations. The district operates on two levels: above-ground department stores, fashion boutiques, electronics retailers, and restaurants; below-ground, kilometers of interconnected shopping arcades (Sakae Chika, Mozo Wonder City) where shoppers browse without encountering weather or traffic.
The district's centerpiece is Oasis 21, a futuristic glass-and-steel structure with a rooftop 'water spaceship' — a glass platform covered by a thin water layer that reflects the sky and surrounding buildings, creating ethereal photo opportunities. Below the spaceship, a sunken plaza hosts events, while the adjacent bus terminal connects regional and city buses. At night, the TV Tower and Oasis 21 illuminate in rotating colors, and the surrounding streets buzz with izakaya, clubs, and late-night dining.
