Matsuba Crab Auction — Predawn Fish Market Experience
Sakaiminato Port is one of Japan's premier fishing harbors and the epicenter of Tottori's matsuba crab industry. Every morning from November to March, the port's wholesale market conducts crab auctions starting at 6:00am — fishing boats return from overnight deep-water trawls, crabs are sorted by size and quality, and professional buyers from across western Japan bid on the catch. The auctions are fast, loud, and conducted entirely in regional dialect and hand signals. Visitors can observe from designated viewing areas, witnessing the beginning of the supply chain that ends at high-end restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto.
After the auction, the adjacent fish market opens to the public (8:00am) selling fresh seafood directly from morning catches — matsuba crab (in season), red snow crab, squid, flatfish, and Sea of Japan mackerel. The market also includes a sushi restaurant row where chefs prepare nigiri from fish purchased minutes earlier. Watching the auction followed by eating ultra-fresh seafood creates a complete ocean-to-plate experience rarely accessible to tourists.
