Sarutahiko Shrine — Crossroads & New Beginnings
Sarutahiko Shrine (猿田彦神社) is dedicated to Sarutahiko no Okami — the Shinto deity of guidance, crossroads, and new beginnings. According to mythology, Sarutahiko guided the sun goddess Amaterasu's grandson from heaven to earth to establish Japan's imperial lineage, making him the divine pathfinder. The shrine is located near Ise Jingu and is popular with visitors seeking guidance for life transitions: new jobs, moves, marriages, or travel journeys.
The shrine features a unique octagonal stone pillar (方位石, hoiseki) inscribed with compass directions and zodiac symbols — worshippers touch the direction corresponding to their願い (negai, wish) and pray for favorable outcomes. The shrine grounds also house Sarume Shrine, dedicated to Ame-no-Uzume (goddess of dawn, arts, and entertainment), making the complex popular with performers and artists. The intimate scale and peaceful atmosphere contrast with Ise Jingu's grandeur, offering a complementary spiritual experience.
