Sendai Pageant of Starlight
The Sendai Pageant of Starlight transforms the city's main boulevards into a glittering wonderland each December, when over 600,000 LED lights adorning zelkova trees create one of Japan's most spectacular winter illumination events. The illumination began in 1986 with a modest 10,000 lights on Jozenji-dori Avenue's stately zelkova tree-lined sidewalks, but has expanded over decades into a citywide celebration of light that attracts millions of visitors during its month-long run. The main illuminated stretch along Jozenji-dori and Aoba-dori creates a tunnel of light approximately 1.5 kilometers long, where bare winter branches of mature zelkova trees become magical canopies glowing in warm golden tones. The lights illuminate nightly from sunset to 11 PM (with ceremony lighting at 6 PM on weekends), transforming the commuter routes and shopping districts into evening gathering places where families and couples stroll beneath the glowing branches. The illumination's design emphasizes simple elegance—predominantly warm white LEDs that evoke starlight rather than multicolored patterns, creating sophisticated rather than gaudy displays. During the illumination period, particularly on weekends, the streets host supplementary events including outdoor food stalls, musical performances, and special shopping promotions that create festival atmosphere despite winter cold.
