Shirahige Shrine — Torii Gate in Lake Biwa
Shirahige Shrine (白鬚神社) is a 2,000-year-old Shinto shrine famous for its vermillion torii gate standing in Lake Biwa, 30 meters offshore. The torii appears to float on the water, especially during high water levels. The shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko-no-Okami, a guiding deity associated with longevity — the shrine's name means 'white beard,' symbolizing old age and wisdom.
The floating torii is one of Japan's most photographed shrine features (alongside Itsukushima Shrine's torii in Hiroshima). The gate's reflection in calm water, with mountainous background, creates iconic composition. The shrine itself is modest, but the lakeside location and photogenic torii draw constant stream of visitors seeking Instagram-worthy shots.
