Suma Beach — Kobe's Urban Seaside Escape

Suma Beach (須磨海岸) is Kobe's main beach, a 1.8km sandy coastline facing Osaka Bay with views across to Awaji Island. The beach offers urban seaside convenience — 15 minutes from central Kobe by train, free access, and summer beach houses (海の家, umi-no-ie) renting umbrellas, chairs, and serving food/drinks. Swimming season (July–August) sees packed sands with families and young people, while off-season provides walking/jogging paths and sunset views.

The beach is more 'functional local beach' than 'tropical paradise' — gray-brown sand, urban backdrop, and Osaka Bay water quality. However, it serves as accessible summer cooling-off spot for Kobe residents and offers easy sunset viewing year-round. The Suma Seaside Park adjacent to the beach has lawns, playgrounds, and Suma Aquarium.
