Takayama operates two daily morning markets (朝市, asaichi) — Miyagawa Market along the Miyagawa River (60+ stalls) and Jinya-mae Market in front of the old government office (20+ stalls). Both open at 7:00am (6:00am in summer) and run until noon, selling seasonal mountain vegetables, homemade pickles (tsukemono), Hida apples, handmade crafts, and fresh mochi pounded that morning. The vendors are local farmers and artisans — many are elderly women who've held the same stall for 40+ years.

The markets are functional, not touristy — locals shop here for dinner ingredients. Conversations happen slowly in Hida dialect. Free samples are common (pickled daikon, apple slices, roasted hoba miso on magnolia leaves). The Miyagawa Market's riverside setting, with the Japanese Alps visible upstream and wooden bridges crossing the clear water, creates a quintessentially Japanese rural-town atmosphere.
