Tenjin Covered Shopping Arcade — Japan's Largest Urban Arcade
The Tenjin shopping arcade system — Tenjin Chuo-gai, Shin-Tenjin, and the underground Tenjin Chikagai — together form the largest covered retail district in Japan. The system grew from post-war black market stalls and now contains everything from department store luxury to 300-yen shops in a single unbroken covered environment that stretches for nearly 2km. What makes it interesting for travelers is not the shopping but the structural archaeology: sections built in different decades are visibly distinct, and the oldest section (Kami-kawabata shotengai, 1947) still contains shops established in the immediate postwar period.
