Fukuoka Tenjin Underground City — Rainfall Shopping Street
Tenjin Chikagai (天神地下街) is a 590-meter underground shopping street connecting Tenjin Station to Tenjin-Minami Station — and it is, in the way that only Japanese underground malls can be, genuinely atmospheric. The design, completed in 1976 and maintained with extraordinary fastidiousness, evokes a 19th-century European street: arched ceilings, warm amber lighting, stone-effect flooring, and window displays in the style of Parisian boutiques. Rain — and Fukuoka receives substantial rain — becomes irrelevant here.
