Togetsukyo Bridge — Arashiyama's Iconic Landmark
Togetsukyo Bridge (渡月橋, 'Moon Crossing Bridge') spans the Katsura River in central Arashiyama, serving as the district's symbolic landmark since the 9th century. The current 155-meter wooden-railed bridge dates to 1934 but preserves the traditional aesthetic. The bridge's name derives from Emperor Kameyama's poem comparing the full moon crossing the sky to crossing the bridge.
The bridge offers panoramic views of Mt. Arashiyama and Mt. Ogura, particularly stunning during cherry blossom season (April) when the mountains appear pink, and autumn foliage (November) when they turn crimson. The riverbanks host seasonal festivals and boat rides.
