Tottori Karo Historical Samurai Residence
The Tottori Karo Residence (鳥取藩家老職武家屋敷) is a beautifully preserved samurai house from the Edo period, originally occupied by high-ranking retainers (karo) who served the Tottori domain lord. The residence showcases classic samurai residential architecture — tatami rooms arranged around interior gardens, sliding fusuma doors with painted landscapes, a formal entry genkan for receiving visitors, and separate quarters for family and servants. The building has been restored to its 1850s appearance, with period furnishings and household objects that illustrate daily life of the samurai class.
Walking through the residence provides intimate insight into samurai domestic life — the careful spatial hierarchy, the aesthetic refinement despite functional simplicity, and the integration of interior and exterior space through garden views. The residence is smaller and less visited than famous samurai districts like Kanazawa, but this intimacy creates a more personal connection to the historical period.
