Every August, central Tottori City transforms into a sea of color and sound for the Shan-Shan Matsuri, one of western Japan's most visually spectacular summer festivals. The festival's signature event is the umbrella dance parade — over 4,000 dancers in matching yukata carry decorative umbrellas while performing synchronized choreography to traditional music played by taiko drums and flutes. The umbrellas are enormous (2 meters tall) and covered in bells that create the 'shan-shan' sound that gives the festival its name.

The parade route runs through downtown streets from 18:00 to 21:00 over three days, with teams representing neighborhoods, companies, and schools competing for best choreography and costume design. The scale is overwhelming — the parade stretches over 1 kilometer when all teams are assembled, and the coordinated movements of thousands of dancers create a mesmerizing visual rhythm. Spectators line the streets ten-deep, but the atmosphere remains welcoming — teams encourage crowd participation and hand out noisemakers to children.
