Yonago Castle Ruins — 360° Panorama Over San'in Coast
Yonago Castle once stood as one of the most strategically important fortifications in western Japan, commanding views over Yumigahama Peninsula, Lake Nakaumi, and the Sea of Japan. The castle was dismantled in 1875 during the Meiji government's castle-destruction campaign, leaving only the impressive stone foundations and the mountain itself. Today, the ruins provide one of the finest 360-degree viewpoints in the San'in region — on clear days, Mt. Daisen rises to the south, the Shimane Peninsula extends west, and the volcanic Oki Islands appear as silhouettes offshore.
The 20-minute walk from the base to the summit follows the original castle approach through stone walls and gate foundations. Cherry trees planted along the path bloom in early April, making this a popular hanami (flower-viewing) spot. The summit platform, where the castle keep once stood, now features a replica viewing turret and informational panels explaining the castle's layout and history.
