Yoyogi Park — Sunday Gathering & Green Escape
Yoyogi Park (代々木公園) is Tokyo's fifth-largest park (134 acres) and the city's most socially active green space. The park's wide lawns, tree-lined paths, and open atmosphere attract picnickers, joggers, street performers, and subculture groups — rockabilly dancers (every Sunday by the fountain), hula hoopers, jugglers, and cosplayers. Sundays transform the park into an informal festival — food stalls appear, live music performances, and spontaneous gatherings create a community atmosphere rare in reserved Tokyo.
The park was the site of Japan's first powered aircraft flight (1910), served as the Olympic Village (1964), and became a public park in 1967. The western side preserves the Meiji Shrine forest boundary; the eastern side opens to wide lawns perfect for hanami (cherry blossoms, 700+ trees) and picnics. The park's diversity of users — families, tourists, subcultures, athletes — makes it Tokyo's most democratic public space.
