Amakusa Islands — Hidden Christian Heritage & Dolphins

The Amakusa Islands (120+ islands, population 100,000) were a center of hidden Christian faith during the 250-year prohibition. After Francis Xavier introduced Christianity in the 1560s, the faith went underground following the failed Shimabara Rebellion (1637–38). Churches built after the 1873 ban-lifting dot the islands — Sakitsu Church (UNESCO site) is the most famous, built directly over the site where hidden Christians were forced to step on fumie (images of Christ) to prove apostasy.

The waters around Amakusa also host 200+ wild dolphins year-round — boat tours guarantee 98% sighting rate.

**Sakitsu village walk:** The church is striking for its location in a traditional fishing village — wooden houses, narrow alleys, and the Gothic church tower rising incongruously. Walk the waterfront
