Hagi Castle Ruins — Seaside Fortress Foundations

Hagi Castle (萩城跡, Shizuki Castle ruins) occupies a promontory where the Hashimoto River meets the Sea of Japan, built in 1604 by Mori Terumoto after his defeat at the Battle of Sekigahara forced relocation from Hiroshima. The castle served as headquarters of Choshu Domain for 270 years, one of the most powerful and eventually rebellious domains that led the Meiji Restoration. The castle was voluntarily dismantled in 1874 as part of Meiji government policy abolishing feudal structures, leaving only stone foundations, moats, and walls.

Today Shizuki Park preserves the castle grounds as a Historical Site where you can walk atop the massive stone walls (6-meter-high ishigaki), explore the inner bailey foundations, and imagine the keep that once dominated this strategic coastal position. Cherry trees (600+) planted throughout create spectacular hanami destination each April. The castle's seaside location offers unobstructed views across the Sea of Japan — historically defensive, today scenic. The ruins' incomplete state (only foundations, no reconstruction) creates archaeological atmosphere where imagination fills gaps, contrasting with fully-reconstructed castles' theme-park feel.
