Hakone Yumoto Onsen — Gateway Hot Spring Town
Hakone-Yumoto (箱根湯本) is Hakone's largest and most accessible onsen town, located at the base of the mountains where the Hayakawa River valley begins its ascent into the volcanic highlands. The town has provided hot spring bathing for over 1,200 years, with water sourced from alkaline springs throughout the Hakone region and piped to hotels, ryokan, and public bathhouses. The main street (Yumoto Shotengai) is lined with traditional shops selling woodcraft (Hakone's famous yosegi marquetry), onsen manju (steamed buns), and local products.
The town offers multiple bathing options for day-trippers: large public bathhouses (sento-style with gender-separated indoor/outdoor pools), ryokan day-use onsen (for those not staying overnight), and free foot-baths scattered along the river. The water quality is alkaline simple spring (pH 8–9), known for smooth 'slippery' feel that leaves skin soft — the Japanese term bijin-no-yu (美人の湯, 'beautifying waters') applies. Hakone-Yumoto serves as the entry point for most Hakone visitors, making it ideal for quick onsen experience before or after exploring the region.
