Higashiyama Onsen — Samurai Retreat Hot Spring Town

Higashiyama Onsen (東山温泉) is a historic hot spring town nestled in a mountain valley 5km east of Aizu-Wakamatsu, where steaming mineral waters have soothed travelers for 1,300 years. The town served as the private bathing retreat for the Aizu clan's samurai warriors, and several ryokan (traditional inns) preserve Meiji-era (1868–1912) architecture with wooden balconies overlooking the Yukkawa River that flows through the town center. The onsen water emerges at 57°C with sulfate and chloride mineral content, creating smooth, beautifying waters known locally as 'bihada-no-yu' (美肌の湯, 'beautiful skin hot springs').

The town's main street follows the river, lined with traditional wooden buildings, stone bridges, and the footbaths where locals gather. At night, paper lanterns illuminate the riverside, and steam rises from the river where onsen water flows into the stream. The most atmospheric experience is staying overnight at a historic ryokan, where multi-course kaiseki dinners are served in private rooms, followed by rotenburo (open-air bathing) under stars. Day visitors can access public baths or foot baths for a more accessible onsen introduction.
