Ibusuki Sand Bath — Buried Alive on the Beach

Ibusuki is famous for sunamushi onsen (砂むし温泉) — hot sand baths where attendants bury visitors up to the neck in naturally heated volcanic sand on the beach. The sand is warmed by underground hot springs to 50–55°C, creating a sauna effect while the weight of the sand compresses the body. The 10–15 minute burial is said to improve circulation, relieve muscle pain, and induce deep sweating.

The main sand bath facility, Saraku, operates directly on Ibusuki's beachfront with ocean views — you're literally buried on the beach with waves breaking 20 meters away.
