Kamakura Komachi-dori — Temple Town Shopping Street
Komachi-dori (小町通り, Komachi Street) is Kamakura's main pedestrian shopping street, a narrow 350-meter lane packed with 250+ shops and restaurants connecting Kamakura Station to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. The street specializes in traditional crafts, souvenir snacks, and Kamakura-specific foods: freshly grilled senbei (rice crackers), croquettes, soft-serve ice cream in unusual flavors (purple sweet potato, matcha, sakura), and shirasu-don (whitebait rice bowls).
The street's appeal is the density and variety — every few meters presents new shops selling antiques, kimono, Buddhist prayer beads, local sake, handmade ceramics, or street food. The traditional machiya architecture (wooden storefronts with latticed windows) creates historic atmosphere despite the tourist-focused commerce. Weekends see shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, making browsing slow but creating festival-like energy. The street functions as the commercial spine of Kamakura's temple pilgrimage circuit.
