Kirishima Shrine — Sacred Mountain Complex
Kirishima Jingu is a Shinto shrine complex set deep in the forested slopes of the Kirishima volcanic range, dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto — the deity who according to mythology descended from heaven to rule Japan, landing on nearby Mt. Takachiho. The main hall, built in 1715, is painted in brilliant vermillion with elaborate carvings, standing in sharp contrast to the surrounding cedar forest.
The shrine marks the legendary birthplace of the Japanese imperial line, making it one of Kyushu's most historically significant religious sites.
