Shimotori & Kamitori Arcades — Kumamoto's Shopping Heart
Shimotori and Kamitori are parallel covered shopping arcades running for 1.2km through central Kumamoto — the longest arcade system in Kyushu. Built in the 1950s and continuously expanded, the arcades contain 300+ shops ranging from department stores to local crafts, with an emphasis on Kumamoto-made products: Higo temari (decorative thread balls), Yamaga lanterns, and local food specialties.
The arcade system connects to Kumamoto Castle (10-minute walk north) and Suizenji Garden (15-minute tram south), making it a natural midpoint for city sightseeing.
