Lucky Pierrot — Hokkaido's Beloved Burger Chain

Lucky Pierrot (ラッキーピエロ) is a Hakodate-only burger chain with 17 locations, each themed differently (pirate ship, carousel, Chinese palace, etc.). Founded in 1987, it has become a cultural institution — locals call it 'Rakkii' and visitors make pilgrimage for the 'Chinese Chicken Burger' (チャイニーズチキンバーガー), a fried chicken thigh on a bun topped with sweet-and-sour sauce, lettuce, and mayo. The burger is messy, indulgent, and utterly Japanese in its fusion sensibility.

The chain's mascot is a clown (Lucky Pierrot = Lucky Clown), and locations are decorated with overwhelming kitsch — mannequins, neon, vintage toys, carousel horses. The experience is part American diner, part Japanese pop maximalism. Despite the tourist popularity, locals genuinely eat here — a rarity for 'famous' regional chains.
