Maruo Falls — Hidden Waterfall in the Forest
Maruo Falls (丸尾滝) is a 23-meter waterfall on the approach to Kirishima Shrine, unique among Japanese waterfalls because its water source is entirely from hot springs — the water cascading over the cliff is 40°C, creating steam at the base and producing a subtle sulfur aroma. The warm water sustains tropical plants around the falls despite Kirishima's cool highland climate.
The falls are illuminated nightly (18:00–22:00), creating a dramatic night-time spectacle as steam glows in the lights.
