Saiki Gyoichi Market — Tuna Fishing Port
Saiki City on Oita's southern coast is one of Kyushu's major fishing ports, particularly renowned for tuna and mackerel. The Saiki Gyoichi (佐伯魚市, Fish Market) opens to the public on weekends when visitors can watch tuna auctions, purchase ultra-fresh sashimi from market vendors, and eat at no-frills market cafeterias where fishmongers' wives serve rice bowls topped with whatever came off the boat that morning.
Saiki's fishing fleet operates in the Bungo Channel where the Pacific meets the Seto Inland Sea — convergence of currents creates rich fishing grounds.
