Toyama Bay is the only place in the world where firefly squid (hotaru-ika, ホタルイカ) wash ashore en masse during their spawning season (March–May), creating a bioluminescent spectacle as thousands of tiny squid glow electric blue in the waves. The squid, just 7cm long, emit light from photophores (light-producing organs) along their bodies, evolved as camouflage and mating signals in the deep sea.

The phenomenon occurs when firefly squid rise from depths of 200–600 meters to spawn in shallow coastal waters. On certain nights, particularly around new moons in April, the squid wash ashore in massive numbers, causing beaches to shimmer blue. The display is brightest in total darkness — observers must avoid flashlights and camera flashes to preserve night vision and see the bioluminescence.

Namikawa Town, on Toyama Bay's coast, is the epicenter of firefly squid tourism. The Hotaruika Museum offers exhibits on the squid's biology and hosts early morning viewing tours (3:00am–5:00am, March–May) departing by boat to witness the phenomenon offshore where bioluminescence is brightest.
